terrible interactive website (use khanacademy)

i completely dislike this program -> stupid interaction -> waters down/overexplains topics, can't hit the right balance -> stop the video when you go to the next question!!! -> some of these make no sense/twist reality so much in a way that fits the mathematical topic (E.g the basketball fouling question - they obviously didn't mean to foul) -> also starting with application then teaching intuition and concepts is a proven way for failure -> overall this is terrible as a learning source and supplementary!!!

Real-World Application Lessons (A snap!)

This is a great teaching tool. I would suggest that this be used once a unit? Otherwise students may feel inundated with this lesson format and lose interest. I liked the ability to search for content standards and grade level to pinpoint which lessons would benefit my students most. Students who are constantly asking or thinking about "why do we need to learn this" will find it gratifying to see real-world current applications of mathematical content and concepts. Visual learners will appreciate the visual tools (slideshows, videos, applets) incorporated into each lesson. The price point is a little steep, however I suggest finding several math teachers in your building who would be willing to chip in for one login. There is nothing specifically tied to your account, just open access to all of the lessons. I will definitely continue to use this as at the middle and high school level!

Well-developed lessons with section to talk to your peers about how it went.

Well developed lessons, handouts, videos, the whole caboodle really. There's few things to add to the lesson plans other than extension activities for higher functioning students or adding some depth and complexity to assignments on your own. The pictures and videos are great - standards-based and content-oriented with few distractions to keep students on task.

Mathalicious is a great website for all ages due to the variety of topics it addresses.

My overall opinion on this product is that it is great for multiple age levels and for many different levels of math. This product would be great for individual or group work as well as teacher led to start it off and then for the whole class to take it from there and complete the project. Mathalicious is linked to real life applications and this makes it more interesting to students because it addresses many everyday issues. I will use this year round when teaching certain concepts in math.

Excited to share this with my teachers!

When I first signed up for Mathalicious, I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I found is a website full of real-world, high-interest lessons aligned to common core standards. Math concepts are taught through real-world topics that include: purchasing family wireless plans, BMI as a measure of health, the real cost of using credit cards and whether or not romance can be modeled with mathematics to name a few. The lessons are comprehensive and provide all the tools necessary to implement the lesson effectively. Each lesson includes a plan, a teach and a reflect tab. The plan contains the student targets, any pre-teaching that might be necessary, student hand-outs and a comprehensive teaching guide. The teach tab has all of the questions from the teaching guide as well as any graphics, videos or links relevant to the lesson. The reflect tab is designed to be used by teachers who have taught the lesson. The hope is that it will provide insight to teachers who would like to use the lesson in the future. I am very excited about this site and have signed up for a trail to use with my teachers.

Practical application of math in the Real World

If I was a math teacher at a middle or high school, I would definitely use this product. They are also aligned to the Common Core Standards as well. The lessons pertain to real-world events happening now and include athletes, musicians, and other popular things students can relate to. It helps to focus students on things happening around them and understand that math is all around us. The activities can be challenging and encourage group work and discussions. I think it does a good job of leveraging current events while embedding math in ways students might not naturally notice.

Math, fun and real-world questions all combined into great lessons.

I love the lessons that mathalicious provides for teachers. Our school uses them with a variety of teachers because there is so much support built into the teacher guide. If you are a newer teacher you can use the lesson right from the website and the guiding questions will help you guide your students. If you are more of a seasoned teacher you are able to pick and chose what you want to use with your students and the lesson is still as coherent as they originally wrote it. It is almost like Mathalicious thought of the variety of teacher types and differentiated their lessons to meet the different needs of teachers. Something I would love to see from Mathalicious is more K-5 lessons I could use with elementary teachers. They could totally benefit from the structure of their lesson guides.

Great ideas for Project Based Learning!

If you are looking to implement project based learning within your classroom, Mathalicious is a great place to start. The lessons are truly engaging and the students love working on the projects rather than the old "sit and get" method. One of the drawbacks is that you have to pay $10-$30 a month for the website. I do believe that the lessons are worth the money, but as a teacher I know that it can be a struggle to pay that much for one website.

Real world applications encourage creative problem-solving and student questioning.

I love this website. When I used it last year, I found that I needed to supplement the materials with support. My students were not always able to mathematically do what the lessons assumed they could, although I don't think this is a shortcoming; as a teacher, I should have better anticipated where they would get confused. What is great about Mathalicious is their creative ideas for lessons. I don't mind having to support with practice when someone else has great ideas, and has created graphics and worksheets to accompany those ideas. It's a little pricey for a teacher who doesn't have school financial support.
