My Take

The program has a great deal of potential. I encourage my students use it in place of PowerPoint or Prezi. Many of my colleagues still have students complete PowerPoint presentations, but I recommend to students to ask if they can create a PowToon instead. I think PowToon is much easier to use when creating an more animated presentation. Plus, PowToon just upgraded the site to allow for the insertion of videos. I definitely think you should give it a try in your classroom.

How I Use It

I have used this in two different ways in my digital fluency course for 8th graders. The first way is I have students create a 30 to 60 second video about the activities that did over the summer. Since this course is only offered for nine weeks, in the winter time I change it to a video about their winter break. The second project that I have students complete is a commercial project. I have students work in small groups and select a script of a radio commercial from a packet of pre-created scripts (https://www.voices.com/resources/scripts or https://www.voices.com/documents/secure/voices.com-commercial-scripts-f…). Once a script is chosen they use Audacity or a voice recorder app to record the audio for the commercial. After editing the audio they import it into PowToon to create the visual component of the commercial. The project worked well, but there were some issues that arose with only one student being able to work on the PowToon at one time.
