Caveat Emptor!

I made a simple proof-of-concept video after signing up for a Powtoon education plan and inadvertently included a “special” feature. Though it was very clearly stated in the Terms & Conditions, and it’s my fault for not grasping that nuance, once I exported this silly little video, I was not able to request a refund even though it was only a day later. ** I was totally in the wrong. ** I read about the 14-day cancellation policy. I didn’t realize until it was too late that on page 21 of their 23-page T&C, that once I export a video with this “special” feature, I have waived all my rights to a refund. It was a 90 second silly proof-of-concept just to test the export. I didn’t realize I triggered the refund waiver. My bad. I asked then to please reconsider and Gisele said “Please know that this was agreed on our Terms and Conditions. You have exported your Powtoons usng (sic) paid features, we no longer refund this I am sorry.” It appears they need my $48 more than I do and given that there are about 40 million unemployed people I guess I should find other things to be worried about, but when a company treats people (customers or not) like this, I figure I should at least say something to the world.

My students created a Powtoon Resume and loved it. Make sure you remind them not to select any "pro" items. You may not see them when you are creating it, but when you are showing it in class it really destroys your presentation.

I LOVE this tool. Mainly I love it because my students love it. I tell them that they are creating a "commercial" about themselves when they are making their resumes and they buy into it 100%. Even that student that refuses to do any work at all loves working on this. This is a great presentation tool for students in Jr/Sr High to use. The only thing I can think of that would make it better is to connect it directly to Google Classroom for grading purposes. And more FREE items to choose from :-)

Powtoon Pops!

I found that this application had a lot of versatility. For one, it gave the user options with multiple basic templates and free images for general usage. Having learned from past experiences, I was keeping an eye out for anything that said "pro" in the corner but was pleasantly surprised to find a variety of free-use images, scene templates, and shapes. They even had different themes that could be tailored to the kind of presentation you want to give based to your target audience may be (such as cartoon, infographic, modern, etc.). Each style came with its own selection of cartoon characters. These cartoons had several kinds of expressions and animations depending on different actions you can choose for them (ie. happy, angry, thinking, typing, idea). I found that this gave me options and that I could even tell a kind of visual story to relate the ideas of the presentation; they didn't feel static or limited in emotion, but just as versatile as the rest of the application. One of the few downsides, I found, however, was that Powtoon to be considerably slower than I would have liked. At first, I thought that it could be a problem on my side, but I was using my work computer (which runs very well on various kinds of software) and I had a strong connection and haven't had problems with similar apps and online resources (such as slideshow or WeVideo). At times during editing, the lag became annoying. While it was a minor (and intermittent) hurdle, it became noticeable that the cursor did not move in unison with my mouse and at the worst of it, I had to take care to put the images and text boxes in the right place on the slide without messing up the carefully arranged images. This was my biggest and probably my only gripe with Powtoon. If I were given some time to think, I could probably nitpick at it but overall, it's useful and fulfills its purpose. Powtoon's biggest strength was what drew me to it in the first place: the color. This APP looks really good, and that's a concern whenever you're doing a presentation. It could potentially be easy to go overboard with Powtoon, but you can't discount the power of panache. Boring isn't memorable; bold is.

A highly creative way for students to show what they know using animation

I absolutely love Powtoons for a number of reasons. The first being that it can be a completely student driven tool. This tool fits under the "create" level on Bloom's Taxonomy, which is the highest level on the pyramid. Students are having to develop an animation video to inform, persuade, or entertain a variety of audiences. They can work together to accomplish their video , which would require collaboration and communication for it to be effective. Third graders can have a difficult time working in collaborative groups, but because this program is so engaging they want to be able to work well together in order for their presentation to be successful. This website fits under the Redefinition category of the SAMR framework. They are making a short digital animation video that they wouldn't be able to create otherwise without the use of technology. This video can be used to teach other classes or audiences about a subject they are currently learning about. Students can also be as creative as they want to be with the Powtoons and all of the animation features it provides. As a recommendation and prior experience, I would recommend telling the students they need to write or record their information first before they get caught up in all of the animations. In addition, this tool serves a lot of the needs of my students. It allows English Language Learners to voice their opinions with the recording element on the program. It helps my students who have a difficult time organizing thoughts and ideas. With the slide tool on the program, it allows students to organize their thoughts into groups. Each subtopic or idea can have it's own slide. Many of my students are very out of the box thinkers, and get bored with writing down their speeches or anything that doesn't allow them to be creative. This tool allows those students to show off their creativity while still meeting the needs of the standards or expectations I am giving. I have a student who currently receives speech therapy, but because this tool is so engaging she wants to use the voice recording and talk as clearly as she can. I especially like that Powtoons require my students to give their thoughts fluently and expressively. I have them write down their speeches beforehand and then record it, so they are working on their reading fluency and accuracy at the same time. Sometimes I use Powtoons to present information in a different way. This is very helpful for my students who are visual learners and need to see pictures to access the information given. I wish some of the tools on Powtoons were easier to navigate or use however. Like I mentioned before, I had to give my students a lot of time to explore the website before using it in an assignment. It is very easy for the students to login using their gmail account, but that also means that I have to have their email account to access their presentation to check it. This can be a safety concern, because I'm not always aware of how students are using the program or the information they are putting on it. I wish that they had a set up like "Google Classroom," where the teacher could set up an account and then the students could get on the account by a code and create videos through the classroom. I think this would also allow students to use their critical thinking skills to evaluate each others videos by commenting on it through the classroom.

Lots of fun for presentations!!!

I really like this as a presentation tool because it allows students to get creative. By giving them a presentation topic and scaffolding their English along the way, you can help them combine both tech skills as well as language skills. I also recommend having students evaluate each other's presentations for accuracy, organization, content and even effects. By setting a rubric beforehand highlighting specific areas, this can function as a point of reflection for the class.

Wonderful Concept, but Does Not Function as Promised

As a teaching tool, in concept, this is a wonderful program! I love the options and the idea that this slideshow can play more like an animated movie. It is a simplified way of creating an animated story. The kids did love this program, but became very frustrated when it did not save their work properly (even though they clicked the save button multiple times before closing.) Overall, the performance for the program was inconsistent. I would say that the program worked well for 50% of my students. I was wondering if the problem was from my school's end, but we just updated our internet service this past summer because we have so many new computers and devices. I teach a digital class (we are paper free) and I use many programs throughout the year, so having so many problems with this program was a big disappointment.

Powtoon allows students or teachers to create animated videos for the class.

I think this product works well as a presentation tool for students. Students are engaged in the presentations because of the animation and graphics. It another tool other than powerpoint ot use for presentations purposes.

A fun, engaging way to capture your audience!

I really enjoy using Powtoon and your students will love this tool too! After introducing various presentation ware to students, I like having the ability to offer choice later in the year as to the “tool of choice” for collaboration and presentation. The product engages critical thinking skills and requires strategic planning and execution in order to create an effective presentation. Definitely, not your mundane presentation!

Fun Animated Presentations for Students

Students enjoy using this application because it allows them to explore and create. The app lets students led the educational process in a fun and exciting way. The app is easy to use and makes creating animations fun. The free version is almost like a trial version. However, the paid app it more beneficial in the classroom as it opens up more educational opportunities.
