Students are motivated to complete problems and advance.
Free Rice gives students the motivation to practice math facts and drills in other subjects. I find that students love seeing how many grains of rice they can donate. I commonly hear students asking, "Am I really donating rice?" When I say, "Yes," they are even more motivated. The visual of rice in the bowl is excellent.

Learn something and help someone at the same time!
This site allows students to take multiple-choice online quizzes on a variety of subjects and “earn” rice that is donated to the United Nations World Food Program. As users get correct answers, a visual of a rice bowl fills up, showing how much they’ve donated. As students get correct answers the level of difficulty will increase. Incorrect answers are repeated. Students can also learn about how to fight hunger. Users can play on their own, join other groups, or teachers can create their own groups. This is a legitimate site that has been online for several years.

My Go-To Tool for Early Finishers After a Test
This is a very cool site for student drill and practice. The site claims, "For each answer you get right, we donate 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program." According to numerous sources, including the United Nations, the site is legitimate. How cool is that? There are multiple choice quizzes for every subject with multiple difficulty levels, and teachers can create a "group" for each class to keep track of student progress. However, for the more casual user, simply go to the site, pick a subject and a quiz, and start playing. The running total for the number of grains of rice that you've "donated" is shown right beside the questions. There is also ample information on how students can help fight hunger at home and around the world. This is a great site to combine learning with cummunity service!

Great tool for practice, and it helps those in need.
I have used this with all ages, including those younger than 4th grade who are more advanced learners. They really like the foreign language component, since we do not offer languages until 6th grade.

Students have fun with these straightforward review questions.
Students feel a sense of accomplishment as they answer questions correctly and see their levels increase, as well as the rice donated, which keeps them engaged. Students can also adjust the level themselves, which is great for ELLs and advanced learners. It provides good practice with vocabulary, and sparks some interest in new words (and social issues); however, students do not get a chance to learn from their mistakes.

The free-rice part was not a big draw for my students. Other services like vocabulary.com work better for vocabulary-building.
