My Take

Free Rice gives students the motivation to practice math facts and drills in other subjects. I find that students love seeing how many grains of rice they can donate. I commonly hear students asking, "Am I really donating rice?" When I say, "Yes," they are even more motivated. The visual of rice in the bowl is excellent.

How I Use It

I use this to encourage students to practice their math facts. They enjoy leveling up and seeing how many grains of rice they can fill into the bowl. I bring the laptops into the classroom and have students work individually. It gives me the chance to circulate and assess student's grasp of facts at different levels. I can help advanced students develop better algorithms for mental math, and I can work with struggling students to do the same thing.
