A fun, entertaining, learning tool for musicians and non-musicians alike!
Overall, I enjoy using GarageBand as a teaching tool. It is fun and interactive. It is creative and requires the students to think, listen, and apply their musical knowledge. It allows students to compose their own ideas on instruments and gives them the opportunity to work more closely with pitch and rhythm. Students can use this app at home or on vacation. Anywhere! The more students use the app outside of the classroom, the more likely they are to understand more of the concepts I teach inside my classroom.

Everyone can be a recording artist!
I love having the ability to record and add music where we don't have to worry about copyright and citing sources. Students can record their voices and then add in music before sharing out their finished piece to use in video projects or other areas. Finished recordings and compositions can be emailed out to share our work with the world, or shared to other apps to extend our learning.

Wanna jam?
GarageBand is a creative app, which can be applied to a wide range of instructional material, so if used effectively it is a great tool for teaching. Yet like many other creation apps, it take some understanding of the tool to get the best results. Your students will need help with getting the project put together, and if you put in the time to learn the basics, their projects will soon blow your mind!
The only other concern is that it does take up a lot of memory. The samples, sound effects, instruments and effects on the program will take up a lot on their own, let only each project that students save. It's best to have a central computer (Apple of course) to back up projects, thus freeing memory and speeding up processing time.

GarageBand is ideal for recording voice tracks for digital storytelling.
Since the student voice is the MOST important part of a digital storytelling multimedia project, using GarageBand is ideal for laying the voice track. With project that require multi pieces of research and analysis, 'recording your voice track in GarageBand' can be easily added to the project timeline and serve as a stepping stone for keeping a project moving when students work independently.

Wonderful tool for older students
This app is amazing, allowing students to become composers who experiment with different instrument sounds, rhythms, loops, and so much more. I have the Complete Set in-app purchase, but even without it it would be a great tool for most music classrooms. My students are K-8 and I have used it from 3rd grade and up. The instruments sounds are very clear, although the voice track isn't as great.

Great for more than just music
GarageBand is an excellent tool for composing, editing, and mixing music and original songs. But I've found that it's an application that has even more educational uses than I originally realized. Students can use GarageBand to record voiceovers in the background while they are using other apps as a way to outline the steps of what they are doing or talk through their thinking. Having this audio model or recording to jog their memory can help students solidify the knowledge and skills.

Great tool for introducing songwriting and arranging skills while having enough bells and whistles to keep more advanced students exploring.
This is an intuitive and quick way for students to begin exploring the basics of music creation, but what sets it apart is how deep students can dig in, from the piano-roll editing to the customizable guitar effects.
