My Take

I love this tool because it is quick and easy to learn, even for young students, and can be applied to almost any subject matter. It allows students to demonstrate their understanding through creating something. There are enough controls that you can do a lot of things with it, but not so many that it becomes overwhelming/distracting to students.

How I Use It

Skitch is my go-to app when I want students to add text or labels to a picture. I have used this a lot to apply vocabulary or grammar skills. For example, students would find/take a picture to represent a vocabulary word and then write a sentence on the picture using that word. They could also take a picture to represent a grammar skill (prepositions, possessive nouns, etc.) and then write a sentence using that part of grammar. It is also great for labeling pictures. In science, students can find/take pictures of something they are studying and then label the parts. In math, I have had students take pictures of parallel and intersecting lines and then labeled the examples in the picture.
