My Take
Skitch is very easy to use in all kinds of settings. The import tools are great for pulling pictures out of files, off the internet, or just taking one on the spot. Maps and Google images can even be imported. Students can then use arrows, text boxes/typing or hand-write on top of the image, using a variety of write-on or write-through colors. The end project can then be exported to Evernote, Camera Roll, Mail, text and even Twitter.
How I Use It
Having used the "paint" program from Windows Accessories very heavily in my student career and personally, I find Skitch to be the next step up, and one of the best free annotation products out there for iPad. I have used Skitch to annotate images for lessons, documents to share with teachers, and even in making examples for the graph art book I published last summer! Students love Skitch because they can emphasize particular parts of images and personalize them with shapes and text. They also love how easy it is to take a picture on the spot, edit it, and share it with others. The only down-side to the app is when you have many annotations that are close together, or overlapping, or small, it is hard to grab and/or edit individual pieces. Otherwise, this is phenomenal app that is one of our "core" free apps for all the 1:1 projects in the district.
