My Take

Mathalicious ties standards to real world problems through high interest, visually appealing, and easy to use lessons. Questions probe students to think critically and analytically, to problem solve outside the box. While the lessons are engaging, sometimes they require significant front-loading of instruction to set students up to complete the tasks. A few of the tasks demand many repeated similar calculations to reach a conclusion -- the repetition can lower student engagement and obscure the mathematical significance of the task.

How I Use It

I use Mathalicious for inspiration in tying topics to real world applications. I rarely used the provided lesson without modification -- streamlining the tasks to require less teacher instruction and facilitation and allotting more time for reinforcing the mathematical concept. Without modification, students often left class without being able to explain in their own words how the Mathalicious lesson connected to what we were learning in class. I usually put students into groups of three or four for Mathalicious lessons; students complete discrete tasks in small groups, and we debrief whole class after each.
