A great way for students to extend their learning beyond the classroom.
DIY allows for students to be engaged in school while at home in ways that are rewarding. I can see students taking pride in their contributions to the community and pride in sharing what they have done by posting videos of their completed work within the DIY website. As a result of engaging in these types of activities, I can see students being more interested in their classes, perhaps giving them ideas for things to do at home.
How I Use It
I would use DIY to motivate students to become a contributing member of preserving our planet. There are activities that students participate in outside of the classroom such as preventing erosion, testing soil samples, and planting trees. This type of activity would work as an optional extension activity that allows student choice in what activities they take part in and which ones they do not, perhaps as a form of extra credit. This would not work as a mandatory class requirement unless students were provided time at school to complete.
