Fantastic platform to cultivate self-directed learners, setting goals, and critical/creative thinking.
Community Review for DIY
My Take
I think this has great potential for a variety of instruction. You could use it as it is designed--self-directed--or you could find certain skill sets to learn corporately for a project. I would love to see new skills added frequently, as to keep it relevant and interesting and motivating students to keep doing more.
How I Use It
We used DIY for exploration into topic study and for maker spaces. I set up a class and each student set goals on what they wanted to explore, be it a filmmaker, a game designer, a data collector, etc. There are lots of choices, along with levels of challenge. We set the class goal of each student working towards three patches. I would also consider this an exploration into a certain skill that may align to what we are doing in class. For example, if we are planning a storytelling unit, I would consider having every student achieve the filmmaker badge as skill workshop. I would say the only challenge with DIY was having the right technology tools for uploading. Students were so engaged and motivated, we got a bit backlogged as we did not have 1:1 devices.
