Visual Thinking + No paper + easy to add and share = WINNING
This tool is basic, which I love. Sometimes the bells and whistles get in the way of learning. It would be wonderful for PBL where students are guiding their own learning, yet need to turn in their thoughts to the teacher.

Helps students explain and visualize plans for art projects before actually putting pen/pencil/paintbrush to paper!
Paper 53 allows students that are visual learners to take notes and highlight important facts with illustrations(a digital interactive notebook...some students also have real, physical interactive notebooks in some classes, too) This app also gives slower students "wings" to create ideas, visually, more quickly. Paper 53 also allows students to save and share work and it is a great tool for them to revisit to appreciate their own growth!
By giving them a variety of virtual tools and colors, their planning becomes more detailed, and as a bonus, more fun!

A more creative way to communicate through note taking.
Overall, Paper 53 is one of my favorite apps for note taking. I really like this app for delivering information to students in artistic ways. Concept maps in Paper 53 look like they are on artistic steroids! This makes information more engaging for students. If you can invest in the in-app purchases and/or the Pencil, this app becomes a gateway to creativity through the use of digital art and creativity. That being said, investment could get expensive, so I recommend trying it as a teacher first, then bringing it to the student level. I do wish that more of the paid functions were free for educational use. If you do get the Pencil, all the paid tools are free.

Perfect Interactive "Dry Erase" Board for iPad
I have installed this app on all 200 iPads in our building. Teachers no longer need dry erase boards, markers, and socks to wipe their slates clean. Now it's all done electronically and serves the exact same purpose, with a 21st century twist. The ease of use and simply interface makes this a winner and kids LOVE IT!!

Everyone can be artist and use this app for anything.
This is great for offering an open-ended way to show understanding. The pens are easy to use and the app is very simple. There is no need to purchase any extra tools for the classroom. It is very intuitive to use and helpful for students who are visual learners. Since you can use the pen to write words or draw pictures, each student can explain his understanding in the way that works for him.

Artistic creation app I use to help connect students to academic content.
I bought the add-on pack for $6.99 to give a complete set of artistic tools, but the free pen is still the cream of the crop IMHO. I am a true believer in the power of artistic expression to reveal understanding, and drawing apps like Paper by 53 are natural connectors to this ethic. Overall, a basic, but still really cool app.

Paper by Fifty Three is not just for Art teachers!
I love Paper 53 as a teaching tool. Students on the whole, have "grown up" learning with screens, and are very comfortable with digital books and drawings. For those students who are not, Paper 53 looks like a notebook upon which you can write with a "pencil". ( "Real" pencils are available to purchase...that also have "erasers" on them.) Students have written books, taken notes and illustrations while moving through a Literature unit.
This is an engaging tool to use, especially when the class needs something new and different during those winter months!
