Great product to use for all types of reading abilities!
Great product that I use constantly in class. Helps with differentiation and is a growing website that offers more and more articles everyday. Great for a history, current events class, or any class looking for reading materials.

Great product that doesn't signal out the lower readers!
It is awesome. The teacher is able to assign them what articles to read to reinforce content covered in class. The students then are able to read the article on their level. So everyone reads about Grizzly Bears but some have easier vocabulary in their reading. BUT, the pages look the same (graphics/titles/ect) No signaling out anyone. The quiz at the end is then level appropriate and can be used for a grade. Absolutely love this program.

Great non-fiction articles that you can adjust the reading levels on!
It's a great tool because a class always spans many levels of readers. They would all get the same basic content but at differing degrees of complexity. There were also quizzes for some articles that i could assign, and the answers were immediately accessible on my teacher Newela page. The teacher page also shows you who opened the articles. I liked that I could assign the articles, which curtails student searching and perhaps coming across articles that may not be a good fit for their grade level. The topics that the articles covered were current, and most were interesting to my students. The only drawback was that sometimes the quizzes seemed to high-level for my fourth graders.

Good tool! Different lexile levels for the implementation of the Common Core Learning Standards.
This is a good product. It is excellent because it offers options in terms of lexile levels. Now with the implementation of the common core learning standards educators need resources that allow the students to read at their level and with practice continue to read at increased complexity.

Newsela makes news stories accessible to all reading levels
Creating an account was easy as a teacher. For students, they do not need an email, just a code provided by the teacher. The website offers a free version and a pro version. When you sign up you automatically start your Pro Trial. I wish this had happened during the school year instead of the summer so I could really experiment with actual students. The pro version offers options for assigning stories and tracking student performance and progress. All of these features are accessed through the ‘Binder.’ The navigation of the website beyond just reading the articles was not common sense, but the help section was useful. Even just relying on the free version, I see lots of potential benefit in the classroom. I am left with my initial concern, when you first go to the website it states “You have four articles remaining.” There was no mention of the limit once I registered, and I hope to have many more than four opportunities to present current events to students in terms they understand.

Get rid of those expensive Scholastic News and Time for Kids subscriptions because the free version of Newsela offers more!
The benefits to choosing Newsela over the paper subscription magazines for current events are a no-brainer. You get so much more from Newsela for free! It would be nice to see an option for highlighting and taking notes within the program as well as an iPad app, but it is still the clear choice for current events in the classroom.

Newsela is an innovative way to build reading comprehension with nonfiction that's always relevant.
I loved using Newsela this spring. With a variety of reading abilities in my classes, students could read the same article that was at their own level. This was a great way to differentiate. I liked having the Pro subscription to track which students completed the assignments and which still had not. I could also see which students took the quizzes and earned low scores because they had not read the article.
In my opinion, the free subscription is quite limiting. Sure the students can create accounts, read articles and take quizzes, but there is no way for the teacher to track student achievement. There are no prices on the website for the Pro subscription. You have to be contacted. I have asked my district to find a way to get the Pro for next year.
In a classroom like computer technology, it is sometimes difficult to find meaningful work for students who complete assignments and project quickly. Newsela allowed me to have meaningful work that is aligned to the Common Core ELA standards.
I will be using Newsela again next year!

Don't spend another minute of your prep time looking for highly engaging news articles at the appropriate reading level for your students, Newslea has done it for you.
Newslea's tag line states, "Read Closely. Think Critically. Be Worldly." With that, I was in love. I have spent much of my prep time searching for news articles that would be of high interest to my students and at their reading level. This website GIVES it to you. The articles themselves are free. I signed up for a trial of the pro version, but it seems that there is no need to pay and subscribe unless you want to track student growth. I am extremely excited to use this tool in my classroom to create engaging lessons while covering the Common Core standards.
