Goodreads, Literacy, and Education: Making Reading a 21st Century Experience
It's no quiet issue that reading in America, especially among young people, has declined. Teachers can attest to the lack of reading for please among students not to mention for coursework. How do we help students become better readers? Goodreads is a resource that allows readers to collaborate, communicate, and join a variety of book clubs for discussion.
Engagement: Goodreads has many avenues of engagement, including "clubs" and "discussions"; it's very easy for a student to log in and quickly find a book, club or discussion that engages him or her.
Pedagogy: This source is certainly a catalyst for learning, and my thoughts would be that many students would learn from reading reviews, summaries, and comments. Although, the website doesn't use utilize a teaching method, but has many elements to learn from and teach with.
Support: The website is easy to use and has fairly easy navigation.
Overall, Goodreads is a wonderful sources for teachers, students, and parents, too. Do people learn from reading? This website places illustrations, reviews, quotes, and quick summaries of thousands of books at readers' fingertips, so I consider it one of the more valuable tools for literacy in the 21st century.

Great tool for students who are discovering their genres of interest in reading.
It works well with my advanced students who are interested in reading beyond what has been assigned; my students who don't read outside of class found it to be another website that wasn't for them.

Great source for organizing books that students have read or plan to read.
This works great in my media center because I can create lists of books that are recommended for students and they can use that list. Also, when it comes time for culminating activities with required novels, this is a good source for students and teachers.

Incredible source for students who are looking for a new yet challenging read.
I love GoodReads. This is such an amazing website that allows students to go in and look at other student's opinions about the novels. With today's youth and the passion to read slowing diminishing, I think this is a great site that really allows students to see what other kids their age are saying about a specific book.

Recommendations and connections for teens and adults who love reading
Goodreads connects avid readers with their friends and other like-minded reads through personal recommendations, ratings, reviews, and a news feed. Students sign in and rate books they have already read and Goodreads recommends more (think Amazon without the purchase). Readers can read and post reviews, and also visit a news feed of their friends' latest GoodReads activity. Readers can also create shelves of books to read, books read, and books that share common themes, and these are searchable. Goodreads could serve teachers and students better by creating ways for classrooms to connect separate from the regular friends list and for teachers or librarians and students to communicate directly.

An organized and effective way to promote reading to students, coworkers, and friends!
I have used it as a teacher and a student. As a student, my graduate professor held our book discussions on Goodreads. She set up individual groups and only people in our class could comment on our reviews (if we set it that way) and respond to one another. This is how my professor held us accountable for our reading. It was similar to submitting a critical book analysis after each book, but the convenience was unbeatable! We were all in one organized "group", and we could submit our "reviews" any time of the day online.

What a great app to nurture a love of reading. Connects readers in an open, positive forum.
Teens sharing their favorite reads with their peers has the biggest impact and influence on them choosing to read a book. Goodreads is a wonderful app that allows readers to write reviews and recommend them to others.

A great way for students to share about what they are reading with each other.
Goodreads is not so much a teaching tool as a forum for talking about reading. This can be motivating for students to see their ideas and opinions about books in print, and have others interact with them. Younger students (under 13) must use a generic class account unless their parents sign them up. Comments can be limited to friends.

Books and Social Media Meet!
Love, love, love this site! This is a great site to use for reviewing books but is also a great site to use when looking for reading suggestions! There is a social media element so your "friends" on GoodReads can see how you rate books, which books you are currently reading, and which books you want to read in the future. Kudos for a site that celebrates reading!
