Gets Kids Interested in Current Events and Their Role in the World
I love that these are quick 10 minute sound bites of the top stories of the day copy written with the understanding level of a middle or high school student. Telling kids to watch the news is like asking them to read the New York Times and understand it. Often, they are unaware of quality news sources are and lack the background knowledge to make connections to how they apply or affect them in their daily lives. I like that students can show up to my class the next day and participate in discussions of historical events by referencing current events that they had viewed on one of the CNN segments. This resource allows me to make connections between my history content and today's current events.

We don't watch it every day but some weeks might watch it twice or three times if we have a little bit of time at the end of class. My students enjoy it enough that they will ask if we can watch it if we haven't watched it in a couple of days. The stories are engaging and good mix of national and international news. I have found that we often make connections to the American history curriculum to things discussed in CNN Student News shows we have watched.

They love to guess the answers for the various quiz questions given throughout the episode.

Timely news in easy to digest segments.
Although CNN Newsroom has been around since the 90s, it has changed direction to a very focused snapshot of current news events. The segments may be watched individually or as a whole 10 minute program. Because of the video format, students with low reading ability appreciate a chance to get the facts and share their opinions.
