Gets Kids Interested in Current Events and Their Role in the World
Community Review for CNN 10
My Take
I love that these are quick 10 minute sound bites of the top stories of the day copy written with the understanding level of a middle or high school student. Telling kids to watch the news is like asking them to read the New York Times and understand it. Often, they are unaware of quality news sources are and lack the background knowledge to make connections to how they apply or affect them in their daily lives. I like that students can show up to my class the next day and participate in discussions of historical events by referencing current events that they had viewed on one of the CNN segments. It is so great to see their lightbulbs go off!
How I Use It
I actually found it very easy to subscribe to the RSS feed within the Edmodo platform for CNN which makes it super user friendly for kids in my groups. Every time there is a new episode it just pops up on the students' main page. I love to have students compare and contrast past historical events to current events and this really helps them identify and understand concepts at higher levels. It can also be great for kicking off class debates. They provide a ton of teacher materials free of charge, including Daily Transcripts for each show. The show, along with its curriculum, offer an excellent way to address the Common Core Speaking and Listening Standards for secondary students.
