Explore your community with annoted maps.
Skitch is a multi-purpose app that allows users to draw and annotate on images, PDFs, and maps. Students can also start with a blank page and create original drawings. Finished projects can be saved to photos. The interface is so simple, that I can use it successfully with kindergarteners. There are eight colors to choose from and the pen size can be adjusted. There is a shape tool for drawing quadrilaterals, circles, ovals, and lines. I don't like that the default tool is the arrow. It would be more logical if the pen tool was the default. There are other apps that do what Skitch does better and with more features, but for K and 1st grade students, I like to use Skitch.

Great multi-purpose photo annotations for free
Skitch is very easy to use in all kinds of settings. The import tools are great for pulling pictures out of files, off the internet, or just taking one on the spot. Maps and Google images can even be imported. Students can then use arrows, text boxes/typing or hand-write on top of the image, using a variety of write-on or write-through colors. The end project can then be exported to Evernote, Camera Roll, Mail, text and even Twitter.

Simple to use annotation app
This app is a fun way to get kids involved in both building background and reflection. Photos can be accessed through your albums, screenshots or you can take a picture. The visual element grabs kids attention and they love seeing their thoughts added to the 'poster' that we create. I haven't had the need to use it in conjunction with Evernote. My biggest complaint about this app is that it takes awhile for it to recognize a picture that has been added to 'My Photostream.'

All-purpose annotation app that fits into every teacher's toolbox.
I teach in many different settings, but I use Skitch in almost every grade level as a set of "digital markers." So many of our iPad lesson plans have a photo-taking element, and Skitch allows us to label, add dialogue, and color on top of all of the content we've created or captured on the internet. I also appreciate that you can incorporate Skitch with a classroom Evernote account, but you can also just take a screenshot of your image and thus not have to log in to any accounts. Also, it takes literally 1 minute before most kids are using it fluently.

Dynamic. Relatively simple. Frequent updates cause interruptions, though.
Skitch makes it easy to take screenshots, mark them up with arrows, shapes, text, etc., and save them. It works on IOS and on the computer. On the computer version, it works especially well if you have a large screen, because then you can save your work very easily by dragging it into files, into Google Drive, or into Evernote. (See the "drag me" bar at the bottom of your Skitch Window.) The one annoying thing is that the computer version asks you very, very frequently if you want to update Skitch. Updating requires a few clicks and takes more than one minute. I’m pretty sure updating takes as long as installing from scratch.

Annotate maps or anything else
Skitch is a simple concept - write and draw over an image or map. It is exactly the kind of open ended app that leads to some of the best classroom technology projects. The feature allowing students to grab a map image to annotate is especially useful in the social studies classroom.

Skitch allows annotation and drawing to label an image
Skitch is a simple to use free app that works across devices. It can be connected to an Evernote account so images automatically upload. When you first open the app it prompts for user to take a picture, choose a picture, draw on a map, start with a blank screen, or capture from the web. To label the picture you can use arrows, text, tags, highlighters, or shapes. The app also allows you to blur and crop the image. Finished images can be saved to Evernote, emailed, or added to the Camera Roll.
All the Evernote products have useful help sections and an active user community that also offers help. The students are able to figure it out on their own; the features are practical. It is slightly more challenging on a smaller smartphone screen, but the students can manage.
