Interface and lessons are confusing for younger students
We were looking for a program that could run itself completely independently without help from a teacher. However, that has not been the case. Many of the students find the lessons to be confusing, particularly the ones involving telling time and the early numeracy lessons, and they require a teacher's help to help them navigate what to do. Students are able to collect coins and get to different levels based on how many lessons they do, but their overall progress in mastering certain math standards is unclear to them and they have no way to track their personal learning or growth on the program. The developers of the program encourage children to compete with each other to see who can complete the most lessons, rather than having students set personalized goals for their own learning and collaborate on achieving those goals. I do like that the program is offered in both English and Spanish. My first grader who speaks only Spanish loves using the program because it is in her native language. I also like that students are able to choose from a menu of lessons and that teachers are able to assign lessons to students, in addition to the ones the adaptive technology gives them. I just wish the interface for students was more mastery-oriented and that the lessons themselves were more straightforward, particularly for the youngest learners.

Great resource for any type of classroom.
Dreambox is a personalized math program. It takes the student from lesson to lesson based o their capacity. if the teacher thinks that students need a challenge or a different lesson, the teacher has the power to assign a lesson with a time frame. The teacher also can view which lessons they struggle and gives them a chance to preview the lesson. Students are suppose not to use any extra materials (pencils, paper, manipulative) but some students do need it. One of the advantages is that it has the option of Spanish/English which is a PLUS. !!!!!!! Finally, Dreambox has a rewarding system of coins in which students can purchase * music, background, and games.
I do wish Dreambox would give out prizes or some type of rewards for students who accomplished the most or try the most or something of the nature.

My kids have really loved dream box! We have learned a lot this year, being our first, and are excited to see results from State and MAP assessments. It is engaging and helpful!
I like seeing what they know before I teach, by using assignments. I also use those to give a quick assessment of what they learned.

Differentiation at its finest!
I originally started using it in the classroom as an independent practice after whole group guided practice. I quickly found that I didn't have time to do it with fidelity, and realized I didn't have a high opinion of the program. When our school implemented our iPad take-home, I was able to utilize it as a homework piece. My students consistently get the work done, and I no longer feel I am wasting district dollars. I find this to be a WIN/WIN! I couldn't imagine not having it now. I can assign skill focus for students and help them master crucial math skills that are extremely difficult otherwise because of the school day time crunch.

Perfect for individualized lessons for all levels of learners
I challenge my students using Dreambox. We celebrate lessons and grades "passed" or completed. The students work on it almost daily, but if we do not have time I have many that will use the program at home. I have found that the students are more engaged when I assign lessons to them that coincide with what we are learning in the classroom.

Good buy in for a little while, but kids tired of it.
It has pros and cons. Kids get frustrated when a skill gets kind of tedious. Pushes deeper thinking and understanding, but would like it if kids could look up specific skills that they're struggling with.

Great way to build student engagement for differentiation
I love the fact that student engagement is high, if you restrict the games for the low level environments it is a great tool to differentiate instruction. My only problem with the software is that it does not provide explicit instruction of the content. Instead if students constantly get it wrong it provides manipulative options and repeats the process, students do not really know what they are doing at times but they have memorized patterns in order to pass certain lessons. I also would love if there was a higher emphasis on mathematical fluency for the 4 core operations.
