Wonderful tool for students learning to code
Super easy-to-navigate interface that allows users to choose a path and work at his/her own pace. My students have felt accomplishment from day one of using this site. They really like how they get immediate feedback when they finish a lesson. The lessons build upon one another, so they keep applying what they learn and continue gaining new skills.

Learn at your own pace. Not optimized for middle schoolers, though.
Most schools, including ours, don't have lots of time in the schedule to teach computer science. Codeacademy lets students learn at their own pace. I find it ideal for working with students whom I see once a week. I can supplement their online, individual learning with in-person lessons.
Students in Grade 7 and Grade 8 are now learning Python programming at our school, and we have Codeacadmy to thank. One of my only criticisms is that students need to be 13 years old in order to have accounts. You can still use it if you don't have an account, but you have to keep track manually of where you left off.
My other criticism is that each lesson requires students to read several paragraphs of text. This, and the scrolling required, is an obstacle for some students. It would definitely be possible to provide the same lessons with less text. I'd love to see just a little text displayed with the option to click or over if you want to learn more.
A side bonus is the Codeacademy Labs Workspace, which lets students freely explore several programming languages without having to install anything on their computers.

Wonderful website to support learners when introducing HTML, CSS, and other coding languages.
I use this website when I introduce my computer skills class to coding languages like HTML. The students especially like this website because they can see the changes that one line of coding can make to their websites. I would prefer if the preview window would stay open next to the coding window, but switching back and forth is not too much of a hassle. Their simple instructions are easy to follow and students learn how each tag performs its own task.

Great for online course assignment.
I use Codecademy as an assignment in online classes. Students don't get stuck, because of the step by step interactive directions. They also have a hands-on experience with the subject matter. You can assign HTML, PHP, or JavaScript lesson, and more are being built.

I used this to review what I had taught and students loved it.
It was frustrating because the students felt that it was new and excitng, especially HTML when I had already taught these skills in class.
They really loved the badges.
They did get frustrated quickly and didn't want to go into the forums to get help when they couldn't solve an exercise. Many of them, especially learners of other languages would sit at the screen and stare at it until I bailed them out.

Codecademy is a great starting place to learn multiple coding languages.
With computer programmers being in such high demand these days and fewer and fewer people to fill those positions, students need to start learning as early as possible how to code and what it means. Codecademy is a great way to learn varied different languages easily. The courses progress at a good pace (from beginning to advanced). And there is always other advanced users to help out when you have a question.

Learn HTML in a fun setting with instant feedback
For this field note I reviewed the Intro to HTML course, which is part of a large Web Fundamentals group of lessons at Codeacademy, a website that teaches coding with step-by-step examples and instant feedback. The HTML course starts out basically with explanations of what it is and walks students through at their own pace. There is a lot of reading involved and these activities are not for the faint of heart. Thinking and problem solving are required! The HTML lessons provide a nice overview and a good experience for high school students with an interest in Computer Science.

Learn the Ruby programming language in an engaging step-by-step setting
Codeacademy is a website that teaches coding by having students (or anyone!) follow its examples and create pieces of websites with code. It has several courses within its website and for this field note I reviewed the Ruby course. The Ruby course starts out basically with explanations of what it is and walks students through at their own pace. There is a lot of reading involved and it was a bit much at times when I just wanted to get working. I also found the Ruby lessons to be a little glitchy, both in Chrome and Internet Explorer browsers. When I looked to the Forums for help I did not always find answers and not quickly. Overall though the Ruby lessons provide a nice overview and a good experience for high school students with an interest in Computer Science.
