My Take

Codeacademy is a website that teaches coding by having students (or anyone!) follow its examples and create pieces of websites with code. It has several courses within its website and for this field note I reviewed the Ruby course. The Ruby course starts out basically with explanations of what it is and walks students through at their own pace. There is a lot of reading involved and it was a bit much at times when I just wanted to get working. I also found the Ruby lessons to be a little glitchy, both in Chrome and Internet Explorer browsers. When I looked to the Forums for help I did not always find answers and not quickly. Overall though the Ruby lessons provide a nice overview and a good experience for high school students with an interest in Computer Science.

How I Use It

Codeacademy is a great tool for teaching students how to code, because they can work at their own pace and get immediate feedback. Students can work ahead for fun, and complete lessons at home if desired.
