Pros: Brings together student assignments, assessment and reporting, and parent communication, merging a variety of edtech tools into a single platform.

Bottom Line: A family-centered platform that emphasizes the importance of relationships in the learning process and promotes competency over grades.

How Can I Teach with This Tool?

SpacesEDU is a useful tool for managing student work and communicating with parents. As with a traditional learning management system (LMS), teachers can create, share, collect, and assess assignments. Students can respond to assignments in a variety of ways, including text, video, audio, images, links, and other file types.

SpacesEDU has a social media feel; students participate by commenting and posting in a response feed, plus they can respond with reactions like a "thumbs up" or an emoji, which fosters a personal connection to the material. Teachers can use feeds to host an asynchronous class discussion or have students share and comment on each other's work. Take advantage of this secure, monitored space to foster student collaboration and facilitate peer review.

Within SpacesEDU, students can also create their own content feeds using filters and bookmarks to curate a digital portfolio. It's intuitive for students (or teachers) to share student work with parents and others outside of the classroom. By sharing their work with a personal audience, students can take pride in their accomplishments, and classwork takes on greater significance. When teachers assess student work on SpacesEDU, students and their families can view real-time, customizable proficiency reports. Teachers can message students directly, or their families, or a combination of the two.

Because SpacesEDU is a large platform with a lot of features, it can feel a bit overwhelming to new users. To get started, visit the Resources page, where you can sort through more than 100 tutorials on using the product. Teachers can also follow the educator blog, podcast, and social media channels for additional advice.

While the tool is appropriate for younger grades, young students would need significant assistance to contribute and navigate on the platform.

This is a great tool that helps to elevate student engagement and community.

My overall opinion is that this is an amazing teaching tool! What I liked best about it is that it offers students the opportunity to build a portfolio of themselves throughout their K-12 experience. This software is very similar to that of a social media site like Instagram or TikTok, which is what would make it so appealing to students. Another feature that I really like is that it offers parents the opportunity to engage within the school community. Oftentimes, during parent-teacher conferences, there isn't direct evidence that can be shown to parents about their child's progress. However, this software allows parents to consistently see what their child is doing in school.
