Great Game-Based Learning Platform for Habitats

How I Use It

I used the PBS Kids Plum Landing games and videos in my classroom, to reinforce our habitats lesson. In second grade, we cover four habitats that are aligned with our Science Standards of Learning. To my surprise, Plum Landing offered a nice selection of interactive games, videos and hands-on follow-up activities that covered habitats. I decided to implement several of these activities each day in a whole group setting as a review. I began by playing the video to the particular habitat that I wanted to cover that day. This provided my students with an introduction before leading into the game-based missions. The games were a great way to keep my students engaged while also providing a sense of accomplishment as missions were completed. Another great feature that I would like to explore further were the extended hands-on activities that were provided. Each lesson contained follow-up activities that allowed students to conduct hands-on experiments. For each lesson, videos and printables were provided, which would allow me to easily access everything I needed in one convenient location. I think this website would provide review and hands-on learning opportunities for learners in an individual, small group or whole group setting.
