My Take
I thought the tool was great! There is a bit of a learning curve in understanding how to position the glasses and select items on the screen. One issue was my phone kept sliding out of the holder so I had to hold it in place. Also, I think some of my students would be resistant to wearing the head strap because it is a little awkward. Lastly, I thought the content was a little blurry or maybe just slightly fuzzy at times. On the positive side, I love the visual stimulation it offers. I feel this tool would enhance many of the skills we work on in class. Google Cardboard could be effectively used with any age student in my opinion.
How I Use It
This product makes learning come alive! So many times our students have difficulty visualizing concepts or understanding how the world around them works because they have limited schema about certain topics. A tool such as Google Cardboard provides "being there" experiences for students that allows them to explore things that were previously out of reach. I believe these experiences help students link information in a way that helps them apply and use information in a more meaningful way. I would use it to teach key concepts in science and social studies, as a visual representation of vocabulary or to go on virtual field trips. My students are very young, so I would use this tool on an individual level instead of class wide. We are going on a field trip to the aquarium this coming week. A virtual field trip would be an exciting way to help them understand what to expect on the trip.
