My Take

I think this is one of the best math apps I have come across. It individualizes learning for the student and has demonstration videos as well. Some of the videos aren't the best, but I like that they are there as a resource. I love how Front Row tracks progress and recommends mentor students in the classroom to students who struggle. The students are motivated to earn coins for completing problems. There is an amazing weekly progress report that shares individual and class improvement! This app helps students fill a lot of learning gaps. Motivation to use the app AND learn how to solve math problems was higher than I have ever seen. For the first time, I had students asking me and other students how to solve a problem. I rarely, if ever, get that type of motivated inquiry with a traditional math problem. This app helps to build independent learners, with a desire to achieve success.

How I Use It

I used this in my class with my fourth graders. Front Row is a Common Core Aligned math practice application for K-8 and is available for use on an iPad or on the Web. It an excellent way to differentiate math instruction. We started out working in Number Sense and continued on from there. In Front Row, my students used their device as scratch paper for computations and also used the fabulous virtual manipulatives to help them solve problems. Front Row tracks progress and recommends mentor students in the classroom to students who struggle with a problem. I had students from a kindergarten level all the way up to a seventh grade learning level in my class and this app allowed me to differentiate for all students. The students earn coins for completing problems and I was given a weekly progress report, which shares individual and class improvement.
