My Take

Blogging is a great way for students to share thoughts and information about an assignment or review class information. There are many different blogging tools available for students. From the student side Edublog does not do much more than free applications such as Blogger or Wordpress. From the teacher side Edublogs offers good administrative tools that help manage student blogs and these tools is what differentiates Edublogs from other applications. The setup is easy with themes and the ability to upload videos and podcasts. Permissions and security is important so if you are willing to pay for student and administrative accounts.

How I Use It

The goal of having students blog is to have students share their thoughts and ideas in addition to providing feedback to other students. Blogging is most effective when a general question is posed by the teacher and students share their answers through a blog. It can also be used as a tool for sharing what was learned during a lesson. For example; when learning about Roman History in class students were asked to blog about what they learned during lesson. To follow-up on the lesson the teacher posted a specific question about Art & Literature during Roman times. Students shared their knowledge and also learned from others in the class after reading their blog posts. Edublogs also provides the teacher with tools to monitor and moderate all discussions or posts.
