Irresistible characters explain content through humorous dialog
Community Review for BrainPOP Featured Movie
My Take
The students absolutely love the Brain Pop videos! The characters in the videos draw the students in with their wisdom and charm. The characters in the videos answer actual questions written to them by real students about a wide variety of topics. Their instruction is the farthest thing from a boring, complicated, or intimidating lecture. Rather, students learn about the topics by listening to the characters' humorous dialog regarding the topic. This presentation method makes students feel like they are listening to a conversation between their friends. The characters use of everyday language and common sense reasoning which enables all learners to understand the topic. The videos are divided by content area (math, science, art, etc...). The topics vary from biographies of historical figures in the field to information about key concepts. The videos can be accessed through the website or an mobile application.
How I Use It
This resource has many applications. I have used the math and science resources it to introduce, review, and extend topics. I integrated the videos into my lessons about 2 times per week. The videos broke up the routine and students used to cheer for Moby. I showed the videos on my Smartboard, but they could also be projected through an LCD projector. The videos provided visual representations and real world applications of the math topics that I was teaching. I have also provided remedial and gifted learners links to videos that I thought might meet their needs. The videos also inspired students to create their own instructional videos summarizing topics using the Brain Pop general structure. This could be used as either a required or extra-credit project. If you have mobile devices, there is also an application for the videos. Furthermore, there a practice exercises and other activities available when you become a member.
