My Take

I like that Animoto elevates the work of my students who struggle with art and design. By removing their anxiety over creating presentations, students are able to focus on the content and still flex some creative muscle. At the same time, creative students have access to a new tool and are able to explore new design elements they might not have come up with on their own or been able to create in a simple PowerPoint.
I would like to see an advanced editing option to give students a little more freedom, but overall I am happy with the product and feel it is a useful tool to increase student involvement with certain concepts.

How I Use It

I have used Animoto for some of my own presentations in class. Otherwise boring concept reviews grab students' attention when presented with the right Animoto animation.

I have also had students use Animoto to add music and images to poetry projects and six-word memoirs. Along with giving students an opportunity to flex their creative muscles, Animoto's pre-made animations and layouts help give students a better understanding of design concepts (if you take the time to discuss them in class). I found that after using Animoto, my students design their own presentations and posters with a little more attention to detail as they try to recreate some of the design concepts seen in Animoto.
