Audacity is a simple to use sound recording/editing tool for elementary students
The students like their independence in Audacity’s simple use application. It doesn’t take long for them to become confident in their ability in using the tool. They easily transition into the other, more complicated uses of the tool. The recording time is not limited as with other free recording tools. This is very helpful when recording extended material. There are no bells and whistles, but it holds their attention because they are creating their own content and products. A plus, beside the fact that it is free, is that there are many established online resources that help with use of the software.

Audacity gives students an opportunity to hear themselves (fluency or presentation)
Audacity had a lot of value for my 4th grade students, but they couldn't manage the program completely on their own. It still took someone who was familiar with audio recording or Audacity in particular to assist.

Always can count on Audacity for student projects.
Audacity is a lot to look at when you first open up the program, but if you get started by following their tutorials you can be successful. I have worked with Audacity with 2nd grade and I needed to instruct step by step, and 5th grade was very eager to make voice recordings independently. You tube is a great resource for using Audacity's advanced tools.

Free and Easy!
Audacity is an easy download, can even be stored on a flash drive. Simple for students to understand while also offering them advanced editing features to explore. A few times we had to update Audacity in order for it to work correctly, but we have few problems. (Most problems came from needing good mics/headphones, but that's not Audacity's fault.)

Great free product to edit music with a slight learning curve.
Audacity is a great program to create and edit audio files. There is a slight learning curve to this program and will take some teacher direction for the students to learn the program. There are some great online free tutorials on how to use this program.

This is a great tool for podcasting and radio shows!
I love Audacity and I have used it for creating podcasts of my own as well as a way for students demonstrate what they've learned! Students loved creating podcasts and there are a number of ways they can use this feature in the classroom. I enjoyed it so much I did an action research project on podcasting in the classroom. I learned a lot and it's value in the classroom is evident in the fact that it's a great way to involve all learners. I created a handout to help students better navigate through the software, but once they got the hang of it they were ready to go. If you would like that document I can share that with you. Students can create radio shows, literary soundtracks, and audio commercials using Audacity!

After students learn to use it, they'll love it.
This is the best audio editing tool I've used. There's some complexity to it, and it takes a while to download and install it on each computer, but students like it once they learn to use it. My only other complaint is that between the current version and the previous version, some of the controls got moved around so we had to teach students how to find the new controls. This has only happened once, though, over the course of two years.
