An easy, engaging way to review states
This is a nice app for a quick review of states. Unlike many iPad apps, this is actually intuitive and has clear learning outcomes. Anyone can pick it up and begin identifying states. I like how you can select different options for state's regions. For some of my younger students, this is critical as many educational apps have overwhelming content.
This is not a tool for critical thinking! It's simple and sweet - State, state shape, capital, nickname and landmark review. It also has engaging flash cards, quizzes about state nicknames and capitals, landmarks as well as tracking kids' progress. Kids clamor over the ipads to play this, and like to try to beat each others' scores.

Fun for kids, totally educational!
This is a very engaging game that helps kids learn about the states. Some of the facts are pretty random, but the overall effect is that they end up generally more knowledgeable about our country's geography, history, and nationality. There is a free sample but the full version game is cheap and worth buying for the full features, which include the ability to "earn" all 50 states and play mini games that reinforce geography and speed.

Test your facts knowledge about the U.S. in a fun game format
This game is fun and certainly engaging, but without a solid knowledge of state facts it is pretty random in terms of learning. It is ok for reinforcement and enhancement if you are teaching a unit on the United States.

Great exposure to the states (and their sizes)!
I wouldn't use this app as a teaching tool, but it is great for exposure to the states - mainly their shapes and sizes. My students love the game aspect of stacking the states. Just today we had a discussion about state sizes when one of them asked if they could resize the states! Great learning opportunity!

A must-have for any study of the U.S.
Stack the States is a winner on several levels; the game play is truly fun, and students will enjoy balancing the states on top of each other (not easy to land Texas on New Hampshire!), it reinforces basics such as state capitols and nicknames, and it gives a great visual for comparative state size. Additional mini-games are built in to aid in learning the placement of states. Terrific app for students in grades 3-6.
The knowledge reinforced is only recall, but we do expect students to learn the states and be able to place them on a map, and this highly visual game helps.

An okay game to test random state facts.
At first, this is a fun game to try to stack the states. However, it teaches very little and can become boring very quickly. The facts are not things that I would expect or even want my students to remember. Sometimes it asks for you to find the state by giving you the capital. Mostly the kids just guess and hope they get it right. They do not retain much information. The only plus would be they are see the state names a lot and the shape of the state. However, I do not think they retain much of this information.

Kids Love It!
A great little program that gets students excited to learn about the states. If I ever want to have students become interested in learning about the states I just connect my iPad to the projector and students are ready to play!
