LESSON

Wanna Bet? The Betting Playbook

What makes online betting look like such a good deal?

Online betting is already everywhere in teens digital spaces—in their feeds, their games, and the sports they watch. And it's built to look like an easy win. In this lesson, students play a fast-paced betting simulation game where the teacher runs the "house," then dive in to what actually happened. They'll explore why the bet was rigged against them, how the house comes out ahead even when players win, and how the whole thing was designed to look like a good deal. Along the way, students pick up the financial literacy tools they need to understand the math behind the appeal as well as recognize the tactics that keep the true odds hidden.

Objectives

  • Calculate the expected value of a bet to show why it loses money on average
  • Explain how the house edge guarantees the platform profits, even when players win
