LESSON

Making a Living in the Creator Economy

Can you make a living as a creator, and is it worth what you'd give up?

The creator economy has made it possible for anyone with a phone and an audience to generate income online. But turning content creation into a full-time livelihood is more complicated than follower counts suggest. In this lesson, students act as career counselors advising real creators who are deciding whether to go full-time. Using the LEAP framework, they weigh income, risk, and personal cost to build a recommendation they can defend, and discover that the math is rarely the whole story.

Objectives

  • Describe how creators earn income online, and why that income is often unstable
  • Analyze whether a creator could support themselves full-time, using living wages, income sources, and risk
  • Evaluate the trade-offs of going full-time, and make a recommendation that they can defend
