LESSON

Drifting Toward the Chatbot

How does AI earn trust, and how can that change the way you use it?

We don't share everything with everyone. What we share, and who we share it with, depends on trust, context, and the relationship. AI chatbots are built in ways that quietly shape how much we trust them and what we're willing to tell them. Over time, that can change how we use these tools, pulling us toward something more personal than we set out to do. This lesson looks at how that shift happens and what it means for the way we connect with AI and with the people in our lives.

Objectives

  • Explain how trust and selective disclosure shape what we share, with people and with AI
  • Evaluate relational drift using realistic scenarios of AI use
  • Identify uses where AI is not a safe source of support

Vocabulary

Selective Disclosure · Conversational Design · Relational Drift
Selective Disclosure the way we choose what to share, and what not to, based on the relationship, context, and how much we trust the other person
Conversational Design the design choices that make AI chatbots feel like a natural, warm, and engaging human conversation
