How I Use It
I use Socrative to practice English Grammar, especifically for my group of students of English as a Foreign Language who take Cambridge Preliminary English Exam. In the Writing Section of the exam there is one exercise where one has to complete the second sentence so that it means the same as the first one.(paraphrasing). I prepare sets of 25 to 30 sentences for a class inside Socrative Teacher app in my cellphone or in my laptop, name the class, students download the Socrative Students app, enter the class name and immediately start answering the activity. The teacher has the option to add the correct response so that they can check on their own how many good answers they hit. At the same time a student logs in, the teachers sees his name, progress (percentage) and grade (in percentage too). It works with my groups because they can get the answers right away without waiting for me to provide them. They can log in more than once and retake the same quiz because each free class holds fifty students. In this way, they remember previous mistakes and correct answers. There is also a fantastic option to race with rockets!. Excitement, fun and learning perfectly combined.
My Take
My overall opinion is that Socrative was the best option to give a twist to teaching and practicing English Grammar: my students grew in confidence and accuracy. The Rocket race is amazing since they competed to see who was the first to arrive to the end of the line!. The only problem we experienced was that if they closed the app, they had to start the complete activity again or maybe the app suddently closed itself without further notice. I have to make clear that my students as well as me used our personal cellphones without wifi, just data provided by the hired company for each phone.
