My Take

The students LOVE web design with Weebly. It is a very instinctual tool that students can master the tech aspects of quickly, therefore keeping the focus more on the content. Site admin and parents are constantly impressed by how professional the websites created by students appear. I highly recommend using Weebly with your students! The biggest drawback is you are only allowed 40 free student accounts, so as a middle school teacher with multiple sections I had to purchase additional accounts

How I Use It

I use Weebly to host my classroom website, as well as to host student websites. Weebly makes web design easy with many highly-customizable templates to choose from, a large variety of stock photos, and a "drag and drop" format. My 6th grade students recently worked in table groups to create websites that hosted final materials from a project-based learning unit in mathematics. I created a guide to getting started with screenshots and bulleted instructions. Students used this to set up their site with the required pages for the assignment. It was amazing to see how fast they learned even the more advanced features of Weebly web design, such as inserting maps, slideshows, or surveys. For a challenge option, students embedded a Padlet or Voki using the easy drag and drop option to insert HTML code.
