We could travel to current and ancient Egypt in this app!
Community Review for The Pyramids
My Take
I learned about this app during an Apple-sponsored workshop and was very interested in using it in the classroom. This app is worth every penny, and it's half off when you buy more than twenty with Apple's volume purchasing. It instantly engaged our students and allowed them to travel to both ancient and current Giza right in the classroom. At least one student in every period said, "It was like I was in Egypt."
How I Use It
I used this app for a virtual field trip in a 7th grade Social Studies lesson as an introduction to Ancient Egypt. I opened with the Egypt Google Street View Trek to focus the students and get them excited about the virtual field trip we were about to take. We gave each student a loose guide they could use to write on and give them a starting point in the app. The students were engaged the entire time as there was a lot that they could look at, listen to, and read. The students were responsible for investigating at least 3 things in the app and writing a reflection, question, or question about each. Throughout the lesson, we kept asking the students to share these things out, which then spurred students to keep digging for more information. The detail in the app is unbelievable and will even show you how the tomb paintings looked when they were first created versus today. I also really liked that the app had a variety of modalities to learn (artifacts, book, guided tours with audio, paintings, etc.) and even our special needs students were able to participate.
*Just a warning that a couple of artifacts are nude statues, so it may not be appropriate for younger grades.
