My Take

Teen Ink is a great option for students who are trying to gain experience in publishing their writing. Submitted material disappears into the Teen Ink void and may or may not be stumbled upon by other teens to review. Additionally, Teen Ink becomes full owner of any submitted work, which might teach students important lessons about propriety and copyright, although those lessons might not necessarily be in the student's favor. The idea of getting tons of open feedback on your work is a cool concept, but there is no way of knowing who is sending the feedback and whether or not your appreciate their opinion or perspective.

How I Use It

As the teacher librarian at my school, staff and students regularly approach me for information about writing contests. Teachers are always looking for authentic audiences for their students and TeenInk.com is a great option. Students can create a free account and upload their work (visual art and video submissions are also accepted) for potential publication in the Teen Ink magazine or books. Students who are working on creative pieces and aspire to be professional writers or artists can get real world experience in submitting their work for publication.
