My Take

Most of my teachers love this tool. Not all of them use it to its full potential. Some only use it as a wireless remote, but even then, it moves them form the front of the classroom to a place where they can monitor and interact with their students more effectively. The tools that come with Splashtop Whiteboard itself are very basic and limiting, but when the tool is used in conjuction with a tool like SmartNotebook and some training, it can be an extremely powerful teaching tool.

How I Use It

We use this product to free our teachers from being tethered to their computers. With this tool teachers are able to control their computer with their Kindle or ipad. My teachers use it in conjunction with our licensed SmartNotebook software to turn their tablet devices into mobile interactive whiteboards. With this tool teachers are able to circulate around the room and hand the device to kids when they want them to interact.

Monitoring students and keeping them engaged.

This product is great to allow the teacher/user the ability to move about the room and not be chained to the front board. I believe it gives flexibility and proximity that many students require. I think it is positive for student monitoring and therefore student learning.

Helpful for unchaining you from behind your desk.

Splashtop unchains me from standing behind my desk so that I can run presentations while standing amongst my students. The load time is sometimes slow and I'm not sure if this is a network issuer or an issue with the app. Some of the controls and gestures are not very self explanatory which makes it sometimes difficult to use. I wish you could change the settings to turn off certain gesture functions. For example, a 2-finger tap will turn on trackpad mode (which seems like an utterly useless feature) and it's difficult to switch back once it's activated. Despite these annoyances, I depend on Splashtop daily in my classroom.
