My Take

I think the product itself is a great way to take social stories to a portable and technologically accessible level for students today. As a teacher who has been teaching students with ASD for many years, this tool cuts down on much of the work I had to do relying on printing pictures and laminating books. My students appreciated seeing pictures of themselves or of our environment in color, and hearing a familiar voice on the pages brought a smile to many of their faces.

I do believe that the tool is easy to use and to construct social stories, but the cost of the full version app may be too steep for teachers who are trying to get tech into their classrooms. Each individual, pre-made social story costs $0.99; to purchase all of the stories is $19.99. With the free version you get the option to create two social stories; but to create unlimited stories and have the option to print and share, you need to have the pro upgrade which is $24.99-this does include all of the pre-made stories as well.

How I Use It

I used this app (the free version) with the students I teach with Autism Spectrum Disorders. There are two options with this app-create your own story or buy a story already created on a specific topic.

I can say honestly that the app is very user friendly because it walks you through creating each page of the social story for your students. The pages are simple to create, each with the option to record audio, include an image, and/or include text. I used the app on an iPad mini in order to easily take pictures of the steps I wanted to outline for my student. I could take a picture, insert it on the page, write the text for the story and then record the text. As a social story is used by a student they are engaged with visual and auditory input at one time and I didn't have to go to technical school to program it! You can be as creative or simplistic as you want the choice is up to the user. In addition, students can create their own stories because of the easy to use interface-this is a big incentive for me to use the app. One change I would like to see with this app is prompts or hints for creating the social story since social stories have a particular structure that is somewhat standard.
