My Take

I love the website. The Smithsonian Institution does so well with their websites in general. Music history is a subject that isn't touched much in the elementary classroom but I try my best to make my students aware of music's past. This website gives me the opportunity to focus on specific parts of history, the various music of that part of history, and gives me lesson plan ideas as well. My students are learning more about music history than they ever thought existed! The main downside is that the website is a LOT of reading, but there are ways to make reading fun in a classroom, so I can work around that easily!

How I Use It

This website is great for showing students different genres of music, different aspects of music history, and for acquiring lesson plans of all kids and grades. I use this website to let my students listen to specific genres of music when we are talking about certain time periods. The articles give me a great reading tool for students so that we may discuss topics more in-depth. The pictures give me an amazing tool for doing "Think, See, Wonder" activities. The students love getting on the website and learning about the past, they love listening to the old songs, and they enjoy seeing what things were like "way back when." It is such a fun tool in my classroom!
