Skype in the Classroom
Community Review for Skype
My Take
I think it is a great tool to use! You do need to play with Skype first and make sure you understand how it works. There are a lot of features that it has that could be beneficial if you know how to use them. The students really enjoy Skyping with other people, but depending on the age their attention span may not be long. I would think about how long you want your Skype to be. You may need to make it on the shorter side for the younger students. Skype in the Classroom has some great resources that you can use to integrate Skype into your classroom.
How I Use It
I have used Skype in my classroom for the Global Read Aloud and to bring guest speakers into the classroom. Global Read Aloud is when classrooms around the world are reading the same book and you do a book talk with that classroom. The students are discussing the book with other students in different states. Skype has had some bugs I will say when using it, but for the most part it is the best tool to use for video conferencing. I am told that the students are clear on the other side and we can hear the speaker very well. You are able to show you screen to the other class so if they want to show us how something works they can. I have found this tool to be a great way to reach out to the world around us. I would recommend that you set it up first and try it out. Make sure that you have everything you need working before you do the call. When you hook it to Interactive Boards it can get tricky,
