My Take

I find this to be a valuable tool for both the teacher and the learner. I believe that the best way to learn how to do something is to have to teach or explain it to someone else. I do admit it does take some practice to feel comfortable writing and recording, but it is well worth it.

How I Use It

I use the ShowMe app on a regular basis in my classroom which is a mix of general and special education students. Once I set up a user name and password for the students, they are given iPads and a stylus. The students (individually or in pairs) then solve problems on the interactive whiteboard while recording themselves verbalizing the multiple steps to solving different types of equations. I especially like to have the students perform real life trigonometry problems with their problem solving narrative. Finally the ShowMe presentation is automatically emailed to me to view. It is a great way to see which students really understand the problem solving process.

I also use it as a teaching tool to solve equations and provide notes. Once I create a presentation I can provide the link on my website for absent students or for any student to view as a means of review.

It is a bit time consuming to set up usernames, etc for each student, but after you do it once, you have the information to use over and over again.

It does take some practice to be able to write clearly and get used to recording. Also, at first some students are hesitant/shy, but I assure them that I will be the only one who listens to their presentation.
