My Take

Scratch helps students to learn how to code. This increases the students' problem solving and logic skills. The students also learn how to work cooperatively because if they cannot solve something, they can always ask a neighbor. Once the students know the basics of how to get the items to move and change and speak, they can create products that demonstrate their learning and understanding in other content areas.

How I Use It

I have used Scratch to teach coding to 3rd-5th grade students in an after-school Tech Club. The students were able to start by remixing basic programs. They learned what the different blocks did. By the end of the year, they were able to code their own digital animations about a topic of their choice. I have even had some of these students choose to use Scratch to create final projects in their core subjects during school.
