My Take

What I like best about this project 1. Students can learn anywhere there is Internet
2. They have multiple opportunities to get the correct answer
3. If they submit the wrong answer I can send it back for corrections
4. They learn that getting something wrong the first is not a bad thing
5. They learn instead perseverance
The mechanics of 3D GameLab is their platform allows you to build your own quests, ranks,rewards, and keeps track of all the XP points for up to 175 students on their individual player cards.

How I Use It

I usually create a quest line that covers an event in history, for example, the Civil War. Then the students complete the quests
which cover many of the aspect of the war. Once they complete the quests they earn XP points and level up and earn a badge. As the teacher you can make your quests or clone quests (over 20,000) from the armory.

3D GameLab energizes students to want to learn by providing an organized platform for student choice, learning, and growth.

I found that students that were not motivated learners became more motivated by taking their academic work and placing it into a gamified platform with experience points, levels, and continuous feedback. The professional development provided by 3D Game Lab is an integral part to making this learning platform a success in the classrooms of those teacher that launch this as a learning model in their classrooms.

3DGL is more than just a gamification tool. There's solid pedagogy and philosophy in its design. It has been a catalyst in fostering authentic change in the classes where I've seen it used. It's a fantastic tool.

I truly believe this product is the future of learning. Let's face it. Percentage-based grading is archaic. This system allows student-players to see their progress toward a goal. There's clear feedback on progress toward learning goals. fMastery-based, evidence-driven learning is where it's at!

Great tool for providing structure for independent, differentiated learning.

I was offered a free course in "gamification" by a great organization in our state (North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching). I jumped at the chance. We have actually completed the course within the 3D Game Lab system. (I'm one of those learners who has to earn all of the badges.) I've been working on creating a course using the system and have a group of students who are using it. They love it. At one point I had a student complete a quest before I had completed it! (That was my mistake because I made it visible before I was finished.) I quite enjoy creating quests and badges. It provides me the opportunity to use the creativity I became a teacher to use. The system is not perfect, but the company is very open to constructive criticism. I was very disappointed because my course ends in a few days and I knew that I couldn't afford the subscription (which at this point is about $240 a year). However, I got lucky and NCCAT wants some of us to keep using 3D Game Lab and share with others in the state, so I get a subscription.
