Quizlet is a great study tool. You create flashcards that can be accessed by anyone online. There are a variety of ways to study using Quizlet: tests, games, and flash cards. It's great for all levels of learners because of the variety. ELL students can have the cards read to them and can select the language to have the cards shown to them. This site challenges student to learn the material by ranking them if these choose to sign in and by giving them encouraging comments to improve. The down side of this site is that it is extremely unforgiving. What I mean is that the student must type the answer exactly or it does not recognize it as correct. This can be frustrating to the students if they make a minor mistake. Also, it generates test questions that do not always make sense. For example if the questions asks "which branch of government makes laws?", the answer choices may be "veto, Legislative Branch, and 2/3." Also, it really focuses on memorization rather than adding any extension of knowledge. When making flash card sets, you really have to phrase them carefully knowing the limitations of this product. Finally, you are really limited to the type of information you can review using this site. It is difficult to add in depth, critical thinking questions using this format.
How I Use It
I use it for students to prepare for tests. I input the key topics, provide students the link or search criteria and they study. They like it because they can study anywhere internet access is available.
