My Take
My students love Quill and chill as a warmup. Some have asked if they can do Quill at home because they find it fun! I have used Quill each year for warm-ups, and I really do see improvement in student writing. Not only does Quill help students master grammar and writing skills, but it also forces students to slow down and pay close attention to what they are typing. Quill will count their sentences wrong if students spell a word wrong. It is a great program, but I would enjoy seeing more skills added as they become available.
How I Use It
First, I have my students take the diagnostic assessment. I review the results and assign the skills that are indicated for each student. I use the staggered release feature that keeps skills locked until the students complete a skill section. I love this feature because it keeps students on track. I use at least one Quill exercise, adapted to each student's skill level, as a daily warm-up. We call this time Quill and Chill. I turn on Starbucks/coffee shop music with a seasonal scene projected on the Smartboard.
