My Take

For me, this allowed me to really understand students teaching. Some of the students were great in understanding how to program. Others knew how to do it but could not communicate their understanding. I liked that this could be a quick lesson for gauging communication skills of their own learning. I also saw great team work by working in pairs. In researching visual thinking, it would be great to have the computer announce the steps to complete the task. The language to do this would be great for the students in ELL and/or special needs.

How I Use It

This past year, I used Kodable with all Kindergarten through 3rd grade students. I also used with 4th -5th grade special need students. I gave a quick overview of how it worked using AppleTV and my ipad. I asked students to help me choose the arrows, once I explained it. I then had students work in pairs to start at the first level and go through all levels. I spot-checked for understanding and application of knowledge. Some pairs were not working as a team. For those students, I either changed pairs or allowed working alone.
