My Take

Kahoot is a constructivist approach to pedagogy because it allows students to learn by playing a game. This fast-paced activity increases engagement in students, especially in those who are more competitive. Plus, it keeps the students’ interest for a longer period of time versus a traditional, sometimes more boring review.

As far as SAMR, I believe this tool leans toward the redefinition category, since students have the ability to create their own Kahoots that can be shared to the public. They can also play games created by people from all over. This tool is a great way for students to study and to utilize resources outside of the classroom. I loved playing Kahoot as a student and now I enjoy using it within my own classroom.

One thing I do not like is that Kahoot is not entirely free anymore, but the free options still allow for deep levels of learning.

How I Use It

I typically use the tool to test student comprehension of vocabulary and specific concepts. A lot of times, I insert images of artwork for students to analyze. I also encourage students to create their own Kahoots to use as a study tool. When the students play this game, the concepts often stick in their heads better. I used Kahoot recently with my high schoolers to review the elements of art.
