My Take

IXL is a very comprehensive site for math drill. Organized by grade level and broken down by individual skills, students can earn rewards as they master skills in their grade-level curriculum. While it is outstanding for practice, there is little to help students if they are struggling on a task. I've also found that my students tire quickly of the ribbons and icons they earn while practicing - it is highly engaging at the outset, but the novelty wears off quickly.

How I Use It

In my classroom, IXL is a supplement and an extension for students. I use the site in after-school tutoring for students who need to review previously taught skills, or just get more practice with what we've done in class. My accelerated students like being able to work on skills at higher grade levels, and see where the concepts we learn in class are going in higher courses. Our next step will be to use IXL as an alternative to paper homework!
