Effective tool for extra practice and reinforcing skills
Community Review for IXL
My Take
IXL is an effective tool for reinforcing and practicing skills already learned in class. Students can work at their own pace on assigned skills or explore those in other grade levels and receive instant feedback on their performance. The problems do not push students towards a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematical topics, but improve fluency with basic skills and operations. If students do not already have basic mastery of a certain skill, practice with IXL problems without additional guidance will not likely improve their understanding significantly. IXL has a free practice limit of 20 problems per day, and is a resource with a user-friendly interface easily accessible for extra practice at home.
How I Use It
I encourage students and parents to use IXL as a tool for extra practice at home. In the classroom, I use IXL for 20-minute skills practice on specific topics and find it to be effective and engaging for students, especially for review of topics already learned (in my class or in previous grades). Students like the instant feedback they receive. For skills in the current unit, I assign students to work in pairs. IXL has a 30-day free classroom trial, which I used during the review unit before testing to track student progress and easily tailor assignments to address each student's strengths and weaknesses.
