This is a great tool for all word processing, spreadsheets and databases! My favorite part of Google Drive is that students can use it from ANY computer, tablet (or even smartphone) that can get on the Internet. No more need to transfer on flash drives!
Community Review for Google Drive
My Take
I love this cloud based solution! File management can be a nightmare and Google Docs solves all the headaches that go with floppy disks, CD's and flash drives, not to mention multiple copies of the same file... Once students have their own accounts (I highly recommend GAFE), it is a cinch to use. It is easy for students to use and I love having access to their work (once they share it with me). If a student's printer ran out of ink, no problem!! Just print it out from my computer. There are many other benefits to using Google Drive. The biggest problem you are might have is when the Internet is down and students do not have access to their work. Other than that issue, I give it two thumbs up!
How I Use It
My school district has a Google Apps for Education (GAFE) account and so should yours! If you do not have this in your district, have your tech people get on it. It's free and students now get unlimited storage.
Students use Google Drive to write essays, stories and their state report. It automatically saves as your work, so no more losing a morning's worth of work because you forgot to save.
I have several assignments that are now paperless. All comments, peer review and grading are done online. This is a major paradigm change, but it is well worth it. I have students take written pieces from draft to published quality work and it challenges them. So many students are used to going through the motions of writing, but the big AHA is leading them to publish their work. They are not used to having work returned to them repeatedly (yes, more work for the teacher) until it is ready for the world to see. They get excited when I post their finished work on our web site. Please try doing a paperless piece of writing with your students.
